I lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast at the time, over near Pass Christian. The government response was pretty terrible; but if I’m being honest, I’m not sure how anyone could have been ready for that. To return “home” to find nothing but concrete slabs and tree stalks.. nothing prepares you for that.

There was a great documentary just released on Hulu about the hurricane after math. It really paints the picture of local government failure, federal government failure negligence, national media abuse, and overall racism from people just trying to survive.

The new documentary on Netflix that just came out really highlighted the misinformation about the "danger" (people were literally dying and starving in the streets and they needed to take food from supermarkets plus hate crimes of white residents in Algiers literally shooting black people who did nothing wrong). I think it just affirms how ineffective the response was. I actually didn't know that the damage was relatively minimal in a lot of areas after the storm until the levees broke. I had thought the levees broke and flooded everywhere (outside the 9th ward) right when the storm hit and not once Katrina had passed. People had a false sense of security once they emerged and were surprised that water levels rose and it was devastating.

It was shit in a lot of levels, local to state to federal. 

There have been a lot of changes that ultimately have taken power away from the local levels and pushed them higher in an effort to avoid what happened in Katrina. 

As we saw with hurricane Helene these changes didn’t necessarily solve these issues.

Everyone was angry then but a *lot* of it got taken out on us (survivors and refugees). Like, [a lot](https://nyujlpp.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/JLPP-27-2-Wen.pdf). My MS town is in the NOLA metro so I grew up with both tragedies. 

These days the rest of the world pretty much agrees we got treated like sh**. A lot of maybe incorrect memory of the details in public discourse (not many people realize [the levee scandal was uncovered in 2004](https://www.laits.utexas.edu/africa/ads/1102.html), wide-scale deep dives into Mississippi’s tragedy has only received a bit of a Renaissance this past year, FEMA was actually [set up to fail from the start](https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2016/09/how-the-iraq-war-set-the-stage-for-the-hurricane-katrina-disaster.html), and government corruption at every single level you can think of was mishandled on both sides of the state line.) [Mississippi has recovered](https://www.npr.org/2025/08/29/nx-s1-5521325/mississippi-gulf-coast-hurricane-katrina), in some ways. [New Orleans has not.](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/twenty-years-after-hurricane-katrina-many-of-us-are-still-missing-all-that-we-lostand-grappling-with-one-of-the-countrys-worst-disasters-180987253/)

The only truly bad thing about being the national storyline this week is how pathetically little our nation has learned its lesson. Trump is crippling FEMA which despite its limitations is still one of the only programs the people have to directly receive aid in the aftermath of disaster. The natives of Gulf Coast are traumatized, [wracked with disease](https://scalawagmagazine.org/2023/11/hurricane-katrina-ptsd/), and aid [still remains in limbo](https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/katrina-biloxi-mississippi-fema-funding-rebuild/). New Orleans hasn’t had a single competent member of primary city leadership in the 21st century, and the state has since elected a legislature that despises it. Despite an incredibly effective (if deservedly controversial) immediate response by Governor Haley Barbour, Mississippi’s recent administration, well… [you’ve heard about it.](https://cdispatch.com/opinions/slimantics-data-isnt-need-to-prove-mississippi-is-the-most-corrupt-state-in-the-nation/). Black and poor people are still suffering. We’re still more interested in bombing random Muslims in Iran instead. I saw damn condos on the south side of Beach Boulevard in Gulfport last week. 

No one cares. 

The Gulf South still hasn’t received an apology. But at least people are letting us tell the story this time, instead of telling us what our problems are and making them worse as “punishment.”

I think we all knew then it was a heavily racist response that illuminated how much we hate poor people in this country, but I had never heard about what happened in Algiers Point before these docs, which is infinitely more evil than our racist ass government. 

White people were just gunning Black people down "like it's pheasant season!" Gleefully. Those white people drinking beers and laughing about murder will stay with me forever. We trapped those people from the Ninth Ward with no escape, no support, no relief, no answers, and no kindness. This country is never ashamed enough for how it has treated/still currently treats people of color.

Without going into detail so I don’t doxx myself, I was a first responder down in the Delta (south of Nola). And I know other people who were involved in the relief effort.

Katrina was a combination of a natural disaster, a political disaster, and especially an engineering disaster. The natural disaster and political disaster were horrifyingly obvious at the time. The natural disaster to come was horrifyingly obvious as soon as the storm hit a recently shed Loop Current Eddy and exploded. 

Everyone though the scale of the engineering disaster was sort-of obvious at the time the storm hit, but we didn’t get a full picture of just how nightmarish it was until a few years later when the American Society of Civil Engineers released a report called Hurricane Katrina: What Went Wrong and Why. Not only did certain dire predictions from modeling prove to be spot on (especially the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet being a death conduit), the report describes failure after failure after failure that culminated in the greatest death toll of a landfalling US hurricane since Galveston. Everyone should read it, IMO, but you need a strong stomach because for all that it’s written in very dry engineer-speak, it’s utterly fucking horrifying. It’s the bleakest engineering document I have ever read. Certain parts are directly relevant to my job…I think about this report a LOT.

The political disaster was roundly condemned at the time and it only looks worse now. The initial state response was absolute incompetence and frankly criminal neglect. The federal response was a mixture of racist fuckery, total incompetence, and an object lesson on why political cronyism is bad (heckuva job, Brownie!). The fact that the feds sent fucking tanks and soldiers with guns *but nobody sent shovels or backhoes* says all you need to know. The only person in senior leadership who understood the assignment was General Honore, and he didn’t join the relief effort until well after the feds and state of Louisiana had utterly failed everyone in Louisiana from Southwest Pass to Baton Rouge.

One thing I will say about western Gulf Coast residents: we all learned that when the skies turn black and the rain comes down, nobody is coming to save us. We need to get up on our hind legs and do our best to save ourselves. Houston stepped up big time for south Louisiana and has continued to step up (Ida, Laura, etc). And when our luck ran out with Ike and Harvey, all of south Louisiana showed up with their gaiters on to return the favor.

At least there was a FEMA in 2005 in spite of how bad Dubya and Brownie mucked-up Katrina relief. Now all that we can expect from FEMA, is to put non-whites in camps and El Salvador.

For me as a normal citizen living in Queens, This envirement full of water looks like its about to overflow and flood the entire city. But certainly if we think about the Science in the percentage of another disaster happening after 20 years, There is approxiamately a 0.7962976651853642% of a disaster happening in 2026.

There was also a mass relieve of when the disaster happened 20 years ago, Peoples houses were flying and people were running out of water sources, food sources, electricity and light.

So, after watching the Netflix documentary and listening to the Atlantic podcast about this, I am really scratching my head as to why this was considered to be such a screw up. The response moved over 30 -thousand- people out from a totally wrecked city and managed to keep them fed and watered within 5 days, in NO alone. To put it bluntly, that's a herculean undertaking, especially when you consider all the levels of government that had to communicate/cooperate to get it done. I don't mind being proven wrong- but what are some examples of other governments dealing with a similar situation in a faster/more organized manner?

No, all the survivors weren't moved in the first half a day because real life doesn't work like the movies. It takes time to gather resources and information. Yeah, it wasn't pretty at the time, but it's a disaster area. It's not going to be pretty.

The problem with the response was the local and state government incompetence. Remember Kathleen Blanco and Ray Nagen? When it's done properly, a state shouldn't rely on anything from the federal government except money money. money and emergency designation. Little known fact, Katrina hit Florida first. It went right over my head in SWFL before dumping back into the Gulf and hitting New Orleans. SWFL has since been hit by Charlie, Irma, Ian, Helene, and Milton. Ian and Irma were Cat 5s. Charlie, Helene, and Milton were 4s. All were managed by strong governors and local government. Feds and Fema are slow and get in the way.
